Yau Tsim Mong District Kids Benefit from Summer Tennis Program at India Club, Hong Kong

Hong Kong – July 28, 2025 — As schools in Hong Kong close for the summer holidays from mid-July to the end of August, children in the Yau Tsim Mong District are gaining a new avenue to stay active and develop their sporting skills. The Nepali Tennis Society of Hong Kong has launched the “Summer Tennis Lesson for the Youth,” a special program promoting sports, fitness, and community bonding among local youth.

The official inauguration of this initiative was held last Sunday at the tennis courts of the India Club in Jordan, Yau Tsim Mong District. Community leaders, local officials, parents, and young participants attended the event. The program is organized by the Tsim Sha Tsui West Care Team with support from the India Club and the Nepali Tennis Society of Hong Kong.

The program was launched under the supervision of district councillors Ms. Aruna Gurung and Mr. Alex Poon, who also participated in the inaugural activities. The event began with a ceremonial coin toss by the guests, including Yau Tsim Mong District ADO Ms. Ingrid Wong, India Club President Mr. Nanu Lachman, and Bangladeshi community leader Dr. Fakhrul Islam Babu, symbolizing the start of tennis activities.

Approximately two dozen children aged 9 to 16 from the Yau Tsim Mong District are participating in the coaching sessions, receiving guidance from experienced trainers, Development Gurung and Shivalal Subedi. Additionally, two Bangladeshi boys participated in the program, highlighting its inclusivity. The program, which runs until the last week of August, was initially scheduled to start last week but was postponed by a week due to a typhoon, according to society secretary Tekendra Subba.

Since its establishment in 2010, the Nepali Tennis Society has actively promoted sports and organized competitions within the Nepali community and beyond. This summer initiative marks the society’s first collaboration with the Hong Kong government to extend sports opportunities to youth in the region. The society aims to foster a vibrant sporting culture, emphasizing the benefits of tennis for physical, mental, social, and emotional development.

With the motto “Fitness, Fun, Friendship,” the society also announced plans to organize a “Nations Cup” involving players from various countries, further encouraging cultural exchange and sporting excellence.

The successful launch of this program highlights the society’s dedication to promoting healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and the development of young talent among the youth of Yau Tsim Mong District.
