At least six people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip, including Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Weshah and a child, according to local health officials and rescue workers.
Al Jazeera reported that its staff member Ahmed Weshah was killed in a strike on a residential building in central Gaza on Saturday. The network condemned the incident as a “heinous crime” and strongly denounced the attack.
In a statement, Al Jazeera said the killing of journalist Ahmed Weshah represents a clear violation of international law and journalist protection norms, adding that it is part of a continuing pattern of targeting media workers.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), however, claimed that Weshah was a member of Hamas’s military wing and had served as a sniper. No evidence supporting this claim has been publicly presented.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 1,007 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire came into effect in October.
In a separate strike in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, Weshah and two others were killed. The IDF claimed that the other two individuals were also affiliated with Hamas.
Earlier, another strike on the same family killed four people, including women and children, according to local hospital sources.
