Widespread anger and protests have erupted across Nepal following the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl in Madhesh Province. The brutal incident has prompted politicians, human rights activists and protesters to call for stronger laws to protect children and prevent sexual violence.
The child’s body was recovered last week, three days after she was reported missing. Police have so far arrested nine people in connection with the case. Protests were held for several days in Simara, while members of the victim’s family later met with several government ministers and reached a written agreement with the authorities.
Under the agreement, the government has pledged to review laws relating to serious crimes and construct a memorial in memory of the child. The case has also reignited debate in Nepal over the prosecution and punishment of juvenile offenders accused of serious crimes.
Some protesters have called for tougher penalties for juveniles convicted of grave offences such as rape and murder. They argue that Nepal’s existing legal framework needs to be strengthened and enforced more effectively to deter brutal crimes against children.
Prominent human rights activist Gauri Pradhan described the incident as deeply distressing. She said those responsible must be brought to justice and urged the government to undertake comprehensive reforms. However, she has expressed caution regarding demands to introduce the death penalty for offenders.
The case has also triggered widespread reaction on social media. Anger intensified after a video showing a teenage suspect in police custody was circulated online. Questions have subsequently been raised over how footage of a person in police custody was leaked.
Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, chief district officer of Bara, told the BBC that a police officer directly involved in leaking the video had been identified and that disciplinary action was being initiated. He said the administration had a “zero-tolerance” policy toward such incidents.
Statistics from Nepal Police highlight the broader scale of sexual violence in the country. According to police data, more than 25,500 cases of rape and sexual assault were registered between July 2017 and July 2025. More than 3,200 of the female victims were under the age of 10.
The rape and murder of the three-year-old girl has therefore emerged as more than a devastating tragedy for one family. It has also intensified scrutiny of Nepal’s child-protection mechanisms, justice system and efforts to prevent sexual violence against children.
