UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Under Pressure Amid Resignation Rumors

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer could announce his resignation as early as Monday (June 22), according to a report by The Observer, which also suggested that he may outline a possible timeline for stepping down. However, government sources have dismissed the claim.

A close government source said Starmer remains fully focused on his official duties and that no final decision has been made regarding any leadership change.

Speculation over Starmer’s leadership has been growing within the Labour Party over recent months. Pressure intensified further after his political rival Andy Burnham secured a victory in a parliamentary by-election on Friday, a result that analysts say could pave the way for an official leadership challenge.

The Observer report also claimed that Starmer has been holding discussions about his political future with his wife at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence, as he prepares for key decisions. Senior party figures reportedly expect him to clarify his position by Monday.

Downing Street sources, however, insist that Starmer is not planning to resign and remains committed to his role. The Prime Minister had earlier stated on Friday that he would resist any leadership challenge and urged unity within the party.

Following a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, the Labour Party’s popularity has declined amid policy disputes and falling public support. Critics have also accused the government of failing to deliver on promises to improve living standards.

Political observers say ongoing instability in UK politics and a pattern of leadership tensions have further increased pressure on Starmer.
