If Russia were to launch a missile strike toward Brussels, Moscow would be “wiped off the map” in retaliation, warned Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken. He also announced that 600 F-35 fighter jets will be deployed across Europe. (Source: TRT World)
In an interview with the Belgian daily De Morgen, Francken stated that if Russian President Vladimir Putin launches a cruise missile toward Brussels, NATO and its allies will not hesitate to respond in kind. He dismissed doubts about the U.S. commitment to NATO, stressing that President Donald Trump has made it clear that the United States will stand firmly by its allies.
However, Francken cautioned against underestimating Russia’s military capability, noting that Moscow has ramped up its defense production and is manufacturing ammunition many times faster than NATO countries. He described the absence of a centralized European military command as a strategic vulnerability.
On the Russia–Ukraine conflict, Francken said Russia is facing serious challenges because it stands against the entire Western world, while Ukraine continues fighting with Western weapons, ammunition, and financial support. He also warned that the emerging Russia–China partnership cannot be dismissed, as China may provide raw materials and military support to Moscow.
Regarding the Baltic states, Francken said the likelihood of a large-scale attack there remains low since those countries are NATO members. He assured that once 600 F-35 jets are deployed across Europe, NATO’s deterrence capability will be significantly strengthened, as these aircraft are difficult for Russia to detect and intercept.
