8th China International Import Expo Opens in Shanghai

Shanghai hosted the opening of the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) and the Hongqiao International Economic Forum on November 5, with Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivering the keynote speech. Premier Li described the Expo as a vital bridge connecting China with the world. He noted that this year’s event set a record in company participation, reflecting the vitality of China’s vast market.

Premier Li emphasized that the CIIE’s success lies in its principle of “sharing benefits with the world.” He contrasted this approach with unilateral and protectionist actions in the international community, which have disrupted trade and global economic order. Highlighting the guiding principles for global economic cooperation, he called for equality and mutual benefit, adherence to ethics and fairness, and administrative reforms to strengthen international trade systems.

He also mentioned that the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China had reviewed and approved the 15th Five-Year Plan, ensuring continued development and further opening-up of the Chinese economy.

Foreign leaders and heads of international organizations attending the opening ceremony acknowledged CIIE’s crucial role in promoting open cooperation and global economic development. They expressed interest in strengthening collaboration with China across trade, innovation, communication, and green development, emphasizing fair, free, and mutually beneficial trade.

The Expo features 155 countries, regions, and international organizations, setting new participation records. Its six main exhibition zones and Innovation Incubation Zone showcase leading companies in emerging industries, including robotics, next-generation IT and AI, low- and high-altitude economies, and green technologies. Over 43 trade delegations and 700 sub-delegations are participating in procurement discussions.

As part of the Expo, the 8th Hongqiao International Economic Forum convened over 400 officials from government, business, and academia. The forum includes 33 sub-forums and closed-door sessions, focusing on multilateral cooperation, digital empowerment, sustainable development, and a more open China. The discussions highlight China’s commitment to multilateralism and fostering an open global economy.

The 8th CIIE demonstrates China’s ongoing dedication to international collaboration, market openness, and sustainable development, providing a dynamic platform for global economic engagement.
