Beijing, September 19 – A recent phone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn global attention, highlighting both countries’ intent to strengthen bilateral ties. During the discussion, the leaders exchanged frank and in-depth views on current China–U.S. relations and mutual concerns, providing strategic guidance for the stable development of ties in the coming period.
President Xi emphasized the importance of China–U.S. relations, stating that both nations can achieve mutual success and shared prosperity, benefiting not only themselves but the world. President Trump described the U.S.–China relationship as the most important bilateral relationship globally and stressed that cooperation between the two countries is crucial for world peace and stability. He expressed hope for a long-term, positive, and strong relationship with China.
The call, widely reported by U.S. media including the Associated Press and National Public Radio, marks the third direct phone conversation between the two leaders this year. The South China Morning Post described the dialogue as Beijing and Washington’s latest effort to stabilize relations between the two major powers.
The timing of the call is historically significant. On September 3, China commemorated the 80th anniversary of its people’s resistance against Japanese aggression and the victory in the global anti-fascist war, inviting surviving members of American volunteer groups to a military parade at Tiananmen Square. During World War II, China and the United States had stood shoulder-to-shoulder against militarism and fascism, later collaborating in the San Francisco Constitutional Convention and the establishment of the United Nations. Over the past eight decades, the UN-centered international system has promoted global peace, development, and progress—a joint historic contribution by China and the U.S.
Reflecting on history, President Xi noted that lessons from the past should guide future cooperation. He reiterated China’s consistent position: the principle of “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation” should underpin bilateral relations. Both leaders agreed that strictly adhering to their strategic guidance and implementing key consensuses without compromise would allow the two countries to manage differences effectively and pave the way for a new era of mutually beneficial cooperation.
