Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended his congratulations to Cheng Li-wen, who has been elected as the new chairman of Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT) Party.
In his congratulatory message, President Xi noted that for many years, the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang (KMT) have upheld the spirit of the “1992 Consensus” and shared a common political foundation opposing “Taiwan independence.” He emphasized that both parties have worked together to strengthen exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, maintain peace and stability, and foster closer ties between people on both sides.
Amid a rapidly changing global landscape, Xi expressed hope that the two parties will continue to unite the people of Taiwan, deepen mutual cooperation, and accelerate common development. He underscored that through national reunification, both sides could help create a bright future for the Chinese nation.
On the same day, Cheng Li-wen conveyed his appreciation to President Xi in a reply message. Cheng affirmed that both sides of the Taiwan Strait reached a consensus in 1992 to adhere to the One-China principle, and that this understanding has led to historic achievements in cross-strait relations.
He further stated that the people on both sides of the Strait belong to the same Chinese nation, and that based on existing foundations, both sides should continue to enhance exchanges and cooperation, promote peace and stability, improve people’s well-being, and work together toward the national rejuvenation of China.
