Indian Air Force Sets World Record With Heavy IL-76MD Landing at 13,629 Feet in Eastern Ladakh

Nov. 8 — The Indian Air Force (IAF) has established a world record by successfully executing a landing of its IL-76MD heavy transport aircraft at an elevation of 13,629 feet at the Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground in eastern Ladakh, defense authorities announced.

According to statements released by the IAF, the operation marks the highest altitude at which an IL-76MD has ever touched down globally, demonstrating the military’s capability to sustain heavy airlift operations across demanding, high-altitude terrain adjacent to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

In an official dispatch posted on social media platform X, the IAF highlighted the operational feat: “An IAF IL-76MD aircraft made history by successfully landing at Nyoma, marking the highest-altitude landing ever recorded for this aircraft anywhere in the world at 13,629 feet.”

Situated in close proximity to the contested frontier with China, Nyoma serves as one of India’s most strategically vital forward operating airbases. The facility provides crucial logistical lifelines by rapidly deploying troops, combat vehicles, and heavy ordnance to remote frontier deployments.

Executing a landing with a heavy transport platform at an altitude exceeding 13,600 feet presents severe aeronautical challenges. The rarefied atmosphere characteristic of extreme elevations diminishes engine thrust, reduces wing lift, and demands markedly higher approach and ground rollout speeds. The IAF credited the milestone to meticulous planning, operational precision, and exceptional crew expertise in hostile aviation environments.

The Russian-origin Ilyushin IL-76MD is a four-engine strategic airlifter that has functioned as a workhorse within the IAF’s transport fleet for decades, designed to move substantial payloads, mechanized armor, and personnel over intercontinental ranges under austere conditions.
