US President Donald Trump has drawn renewed international attention after announcing the deployment of an additional 5,000 American troops to Poland. The move comes just days after indications that Washington might delay further troop deployments, marking a notable shift in policy.
In a message posted on social media, Trump said the decision was influenced by his strong relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki and his confidence in Poland.
However, the United States has not yet clarified what specific duties the additional troops will undertake or whether the deployment will be long-term.
The announcement has already sparked discussion over its contrast with the Pentagon’s earlier position. Earlier this week, the US Department of Defense had indicated that rotational troop deployments to Poland could be delayed.
Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war, security concerns across Eastern Europe have intensified, prompting Poland to seek a stronger American military presence for an extended period. Analysts view the latest announcement as a significant diplomatic success for Warsaw.
Meanwhile, Washington has also expressed frustration over the role of some NATO allies. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized several European countries for what he described as insufficient support for military operations.
Both the Polish president and defense minister welcomed Trump’s decision, saying it reflects the strengthening of strategic ties between the two countries.
