A new controversy has emerged surrounding Abu Lulu, a prominent commander of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to multiple reports, he has allegedly returned to active combat after previously being detained amid international criticism. The RSF, however, has strongly denied the allegations.
A Reuters report stated that several sources claimed Abu Lulu had recently been seen participating in ongoing clashes, despite being detained over allegations of violence against civilians in El Fasher. Some sources said they directly identified him on the battlefield.
One military official alleged that RSF leadership sought to bring him back to the frontlines in an effort to boost fighters’ morale during the continuing conflict in El Fasher.
According to the report, Reuters spoke with 13 sources regarding the matter, including RSF members, military officials, and individuals familiar with the situation.
In a statement issued on Monday, however, the RSF insisted that Abu Lulu remains in custody and will face a special court. The group described reports about his alleged release as “false and misleading.”
Abu Lulu was detained following violent operations in El Fasher, located in North Darfur. Allegations of civilian killings against him emerged after several videos circulated on social media, triggering widespread international criticism.
The United Nations Security Council also imposed sanctions on him in February this year.
