Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kuo Chia-khun answered reporters’ questions about the US announcement of nearly $11 billion in arms sales to Taiwan at a regular press conference in Beijing on December 18.
He said that the US’s sudden announcement of large-scale arms sales to Taiwan seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, seriously undermines China’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, seriously disrupts peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a serious wrong signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ claimants. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns it.
The spokesman also said that the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces seek ‘independence by force’ and ‘resist reunification by force, wasting people’s hard-earned money on arms. This will not save the ‘Taiwan independence’ claimants from inevitable destruction; The spokesperson noted that this would lead to a dangerous and war-like situation across the Taiwan Strait. The US attempt to “support independence through the use of force” would only be counterproductive, and the attempt to “use Taiwan to control China” would be completely unsuccessful.
