India Does Not Seek Tension with Bangladesh, Says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has stated that India does not seek tension with Bangladesh, emphasizing the country’s commitment to maintaining good relations with its neighbors.

Singh made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Rahul Joshi, senior editor of India’s media network Network18, in which he addressed recent developments in India-Bangladesh relations.

Responding to a question about comments from Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, Singh said, “We do not want any tension with Bangladesh. However, Yunus should exercise caution in his choice of words.” He added, “I want to make another point—India is capable of handling any challenge, but our primary goal remains maintaining cordial relations with our neighbors.”

Relations between India and Professor Yunus, who assumed office following the July 2024 movement, have been tense from the beginning, and recent events appear to have further prolonged this strain.

Recently, Professor Yunus held courtesy meetings in Dhaka with General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, chairman of Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and a five-member delegation from the Turkish Parliament led by MP Mehmet Akif Ilmaz. Both Pakistan and Turkey maintain complex diplomatic ties with India, which adds sensitivity to these interactions.

During the visit, Yunus gifted each member of the Turkish delegation a copy of “Art of Triumph”, a compilation of photos and graffiti related to the July-August 2024 movement in Bangladesh.
