On August 11 (Monday), China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, refuted what he described as baseless U.S. accusations against China regarding the Panama Canal during a high-level open debate on maritime security at the UN Security Council.
Fu Cong stated that in recent days, the U.S. delegation had made numerous groundless accusations and slanders against China on various issues in the Security Council — actions to which China firmly objects. He emphasized that China has always respected Panama’s sovereignty over the canal and recognizes its status as a permanently neutral international waterway. The United States, he argued, has launched false and unfounded attacks on China as a pretext to maintain control over the canal. China strongly opposes economic coercion and threats, and calls on the U.S. to stop spreading fabricated rumors and stirring up trouble.
Fu further pointed out that the United States is the biggest destabilizing force in the South China Sea. He noted that the U.S. has deployed offensive weapons, including land-based medium-range missiles, in the region, and frequently sends large warships and aircraft for military surveillance and exercises. Such displays of force near other countries’ doorsteps, Fu said, are reckless actions aimed at destabilizing the South China Sea to serve Washington’s own geopolitical interests.
He added that U.S. hegemony, Cold War mentality, and unilateral actions are rapidly increasing risks to global maritime security. China, he said, urges the United States as a major power to seriously reflect on its responsibilities.
