Dr. Yunus Receives Honorary Doctorate in Malaysia

Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser and Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the National University of Malaysia (UKM). The ceremony took place on Wednesday at the UKM auditorium in Kuala Lumpur, where the Chancellor, Sultan Tuanku Muhriz ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir of Negeri Sembilan, presented the certificate. The honor was conferred in recognition of Dr. Yunus’s outstanding contribution to promoting social business.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Yunus said his government is working towards holding a free, fair, and transparent election in February 2026 to ensure the transfer of power to the people. He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening democracy and returning power to its rightful owner—the citizens.

Highlighting the youth-led uprising in July and August 2024, the Chief Adviser said it has brought new meaning to the nation’s identity and aspirations for the future. His administration, he noted, is striving to establish a just governance system, an inclusive economy, and equal opportunities for all. He identified reforms as the top priority, with plans to support entrepreneurship, increase investment in education and technology, and foster close collaboration with international partners.

Addressing students, Dr. Yunus stressed that the future lies in the hands of the young generation. He urged them to use their vision, creativity, and sense of responsibility not only for their own success but also to uplift others. Calling for an inclusive economy, he emphasized the need to reduce inequality and create a world where no one is left behind.

Sharing his life’s work, Dr. Yunus said poverty stems not from a lack of talent or dreams, but from a lack of opportunity. This belief led him to pioneer microcredit and social business initiatives, enabling the poorest to start businesses and transform their lives.

Speaking on Bangladesh-Malaysia relations, Dr. Yunus praised the deep and enduring friendship built on mutual respect and shared aspirations for development. He expressed interest in expanding cooperation in sectors such as the semiconductor industry, halal economy, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship.

Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, and UKM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Suffian Jusoh were among those present at the ceremony.
