Bangladesh has slipped 33 places in the Global Peace Index (GPI). Bangladesh is ranked 123rd in the 2025 index, up from 93rd last year.
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international research institute based in Sydney, Australia, has released the index. According to the report published in June this year, Bangladesh’s score is 2.318. On the other hand, the United States’ score is 2.443, its position is 128th, meaning Bangladesh is still ahead of the United States in terms of peace.
The report said that due to geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty, the average level of global peace has decreased by 0.36 percent. The IEP says that such a deterioration in peace has not been seen since World War II. Global peace has been declining continuously since 2008. The average country-based peace index has decreased by 5.4 percent in the last 17 years. However, the peace indices of 74 countries have improved slightly this year.
Iceland has been the world’s most peaceful country since 2008, with a score of 1.095. The top 10 also includes Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia and Finland.
On the other hand, the five least peaceful countries are Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Yemen and Afghanistan. The Middle East and North Africa region has been identified as the least peaceful region for the tenth consecutive year
