At least 10 people were killed in a school shooting in Austria’s second-largest city of Graz on Tuesday. Police were called to the high school after shots were fired at 10 a.m. local time.
Graz Mayor Elke Kahr told Austrian news agency APA that nine people had been killed in today’s shooting. The shooting took place at a high school on Dreierschutzengasse in Graz, southeast Austria, at 10 a.m. local time.
Seven of the victims were schoolchildren and one adult, APA reported. The mayor said the gunman was among the dead. He is believed to have been a student and police said he may have committed suicide.
Police, including special forces and a helicopter, rushed to the scene after receiving the news. About an hour after the incident, police said on social media that the operation was still ongoing.
Graz, with a population of about 300,000, is a major city in southeastern Austria. The attack has sent shockwaves through the city. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the identity of the attacker and the motive.
