At least 48 people were killed in an explosion when a fuel truck collided with another truck in north-central Nigeria’s Niger province on Sunday, the province’s disaster management agency said.
They say that another truck carrying passengers and cattle collided with that truck. Several other vehicles were damaged in the incident.
According to local media, a crane truck and a pickup van also caught fire in the incident.
Hussaini Ibrahim, spokesman for the province’s disaster management agency, said the death toll was 48 and rescue operations were underway.
Nigeria’s state-owned firm NNPC Ltd raised petrol prices by 39 per cent last week, the second major hike in more than a year. But the oil crisis continues. As a result, vehicles in major cities of the country are waiting for hours for fuel.
