This year, the birthday of renowned journalist and writer Akbar Haider Kiron was celebrated in a uniquely heartfelt way. Social media was flooded with warm wishes and messages, like waves of affection from across the globe. From Dr. Dieter Weirich, former Director General of Deutsche Welle, to Sarker Kabir Uddin, Roquia Haider, Rekha Ahmed, and Manzur Ahmed, well-wishers from home and abroad shared their love and greetings in thousands.
On July 5, Kiron himself posted a special poem on Facebook marking his birthday. He wrote:
“On my birthday, I ask only for love. I don’t want wrapped boxes-just a sincere greeting, a drop of quiet, unadulterated affection.”
Speaking to this correspondent, he said: “I own no car, no house-only a heart full of truth. If a few people have truly liked me in my lifetime, then my life is fulfilled.”
A pre-birthday celebration was held on July 3 in Jackson Heights, organized by the Jackson Heights Community Association. President Shakil Mia, prominent businessman Ashraf Chowdhury Khokon, sound system engineer Sheikh Mohammad Sayem, and popular children’s author Humayun Kabir Dhali were present among others.
On the day of his birthday, a spontaneous yet special celebration took place at Mama Restaurant, without any prior planning. The popular business couple Mamun and Naznin brought in a large cake that made the evening truly memorable. Among those present were veteran journalist and writer Manzur Ahmed, acclaimed actress Rekha Ahmed, celebrated journalist and writer Monija Rahman, Weekly Desh editor Mizanur Rahman, and literary figure Humayun Kabir Dhali.
Indeed, it was a birthday marked not by grandeur but by genuine connection and love-a celebration of a life that continues to touch many hearts.
