28 July 2025 – Hong Kong — The Building a Multicultural Workplace Job Fair, jointly organized by the DAB Ethnic Minorities Committee (EMC) and the Labour Department, successfully concluded at MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok on July 24 and 25. The event drew around 50 organizations, including the Hong Kong Police Force, the Correctional Services Department, various enterprises, and social service agencies, offering over 2,300 diverse job vacancies aimed at ethnic minority job seekers.
The fair proved to be a significant platform for empowering ethnic minorities by presenting employment opportunities and strengthening their overall prospects for funding and support. Many participants left with job offers, and the event generated increased interest from government and private sector stakeholders eager to support initiatives for ethnic minorities.
Legislative Councilor and Chairman of the DAB EMC, Vincent Cheng, delivered an inspiring opening speech, emphasizing the importance of cross-sector collaboration to expand employment opportunities for ethnic minorities. Cheng expressed gratitude to the Under Secretary of the Labour and Welfare Bureau and the Labour Department for their support, noting an impressive attendance of over 1,700 people on the first day.
This year marked the fourth consecutive year of partnership between the EMC and the Labour Department in organizing this event, now with the inclusion of the Equal Opportunities Commission as a co-organizer. The fair showcased a broad range of positions—from engineers and accountants to hospitality roles like baristas and chefs—aimed at providing diverse career pathways. It also targeted university graduates, offering professional roles such as technical engineers and system analysts.
Disciplinary forces, including the police and correctional services, set up booths to introduce employment opportunities within their departments. The event also featured career-sharing sessions, including insights from ethnic minority entrepreneurs, Muslim community leaders promoting halal cuisine, and youth representatives from the education and social welfare sectors sharing job-seeking tips and career planning strategies.
Cheng highlighted ongoing initiatives to promote the cultural integration of ethnic minorities, including efforts to expand halal-certified restaurants, prayer rooms, and halal food festivals. In April, the EMC organized Hong Kong’s first outdoor halal food festival, advocating for more halal facilities across the city, which currently boasts over 200 eateries.
The post-fair feedback indicates that the event significantly enhanced the EM’s prospects for funding and support, with many participants securing employment and gaining access to new training and funding programs. Dr. Fakhrul Islam Babu, General Secretary of the China Bangladesh Friendship Center (CBFC) and President of Asian Club Limited, praised the organizers’ efforts, thanking them for creating such meaningful opportunities that help ethnic minorities advance their careers and secure necessary funding.
The event’s distinguished guests included Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr. Ho Kai-ming, Deputy Director General of the Liaison Office Mr. Li Wenbin, Hong Kong Institute of Financial Services Chair Ms. Wang Zhongying, and Yau Tsim Mong District Officer Mr. Yu Kin-keung, among others.
The job fair underscored Hong Kong’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive, multicultural workforce and supporting ethnic minorities in securing sustainable employment and funding opportunities vital for their upward mobility.
