Balendra ‘Balen’ Shah, the rapper-turned-political leader, has gained a significant advantage in early vote counts in Nepal’s national elections. Leading the newly formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Shah is contesting for one of the country’s top political positions.
The political landscape in Nepal has shifted following the Jan Jid Movement, and Shah’s popularity has largely been fueled by his socially-conscious music and energetic campaign efforts. While he avoided direct interactions with journalists on election day, young voters have been drawn to his dynamism and leadership style.
Shah’s main competitors were former Prime Minister KP Oli and Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa. Preliminary counts indicate that the RSP is ahead in approximately 165 constituencies, signaling a potential new chapter in Nepalese politics.
Due to the slow pace of vote counting, final results may take several days. However, young voters believe that energetic and youthful leadership like Shah’s is crucial for the country’s future.
