Several international media outlets, including Cátedra China (Spain), The Guardian (UK), The Straits Times (Singapore), and BBC, have recently highlighted that China’s modernization process has reached a crucial juncture with the organization of the 2026 National People’s Congress (NPC) and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). These “Two Sessions” not only outline the country’s annual development strategy but also formally launch the 15th Five-Year Plan, attracting significant attention from the international community for its strategic foresight.
According to Cátedra China, the review and approval of the 15th Five-Year Plan during this key annual political event is particularly important in the context of both domestic and international developments. Over 3,000 Chinese and foreign journalists are expected to cover this landmark political gathering. The NPC and CPPCC will determine China’s development trajectory at a time of profound global changes. Through its policy of openness and facilitation of international access, China has demonstrated economic resilience and gradually reduced its over-reliance on foreign trade.
Ruby Osman, Senior Policy Advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, told The Guardian: “This year’s Two Sessions will be exceptionally busy. Traditionally, the sessions provide insight into China’s policy direction for the coming year. This year, however, they will also lay out broader strategies to navigate significant geopolitical and technological shifts.”
The Straits Times noted that China’s policy priorities are expected to focus on industrial development, technological self-reliance, and building a robust domestic market.
BBC reported that the annual Two Sessions held in Beijing serve as an important window into China’s political and economic trends. The sessions are particularly significant this year as policymakers consider more precise and effective measures to boost consumption and guide economic growth.
