Humanitarian Crisis at Zero Line as Six Stranded Amid Bangladesh–India Border Standoff

A humanitarian crisis has emerged along the zero line of the Goytapara border area in Roumari upazila of Kurigram, where six people—including women and children—have been stranded between the positions of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF).

Local sources say the group has been living under the open sky in extremely difficult conditions since Sunday, surviving on minimal food and water.

Those stranded include Belal Hossain (36), his wife Sumi Akter (30), their two children—four-year-old Fatema Akter and six-month-old Faima Akter—along with Sazib Mia (23) and another unidentified individual.

Residents reported that the children have become ill due to extreme heat and lack of proper care. Although local villagers have attempted to provide food and water on humanitarian grounds, security restrictions have made continuous support difficult.

According to BGB and local sources, the situation began early Sunday morning when the BSF attempted to push the group into Bangladesh. BGB personnel objected, resulting in the individuals remaining stranded at the zero line. A flag meeting between the two border forces was subsequently held, but no final resolution has yet been reached.

BGB officials said efforts are underway to arrange another flag meeting to resolve the issue. Until a decision is made, no movement across the border will be allowed.

Locals have urged urgent diplomatic and humanitarian intervention, warning that the situation could deteriorate further if left unresolved.
