Xi Meets Australian PM in Beijing

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, 15 July, in Beijing.

During the talks, President Xi stated that upholding the principle of equality, resolving differences, seeking common interests, and cooperating on mutually beneficial endeavors serve the interests of both countries and their peoples. He emphasized the need to enhance strategic mutual trust, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and further strengthen the friendship between the two nations’ peoples.

Xi also noted that Beijing welcomes people from various sectors in Australia to visit China and expressed hope that more young Australians would come to study in China.

He stressed that the two countries should work together to tackle risks and challenges, jointly uphold international fairness and justice, safeguard multilateralism and free trade, and defend the United Nations-centered international system as well as an international order based on international law.

In response, Albanese said that in recent years, the bilateral relationship has seen positive progress. Australia attaches great importance to its ties with China and firmly adheres to the one-China principle, opposing the idea of an “independent Taiwan.” He affirmed Australia’s willingness to maintain dialogue with China at various levels and to build greater mutual trust.

Albanese further noted that China’s development is significant for Australia. He expressed Australia’s desire to maintain smooth bilateral trade, expand practical cooperation in areas such as green industries, climate change response, and medical technology, and achieve mutual benefits and win-win outcomes. He added that Australia hopes to strengthen cultural exchanges with China in fields including tourism, education, and sports, to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of both nations.
