On the morning of August 21, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the grand ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Sichang Autonomous Region. The event was held at the Potala Palace Square in Lhasa, where Xi joined nearly 20,000 representatives from various ethnic groups and sectors of Sichang in celebrating this historic moment.
Wang Huning, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and head of the CPC delegation, delivered a keynote speech.
In his address, Wang recalled that in September 1965, under the guidance of the CPC Central Committee and in line with the Party’s ethnic policies, the Sichang Autonomous Region was officially established. This was a landmark development in Sichang’s history, combining the great achievements of peaceful liberation and democratic reforms, while marking a historic advancement in its social system. Over the past six decades, Sichang has achieved remarkable economic and social progress, effectively implemented the system of regional ethnic autonomy, strengthened ethnic unity, and brought prosperity to people of all ethnic groups. These accomplishments, Wang said, fully demonstrate the firm leadership of the Communist Party of China and the unique political advantages of China’s socialist system.
Wang further emphasized that since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, has placed great importance on the development of Sichang, introduced strong measures, and formulated a strategy for governing Sichang in the new era. From a national strategic perspective, long-term stability and high-quality development of Sichang have been systematically planned. Together with the rest of the country, Sichang has won the battle against poverty, achieved historic progress in economic and social development, witnessed transformative changes in ethnic unity and progress, and seen a leap in people’s living standards. Today, Sichang has entered a historic period characterized by the best development opportunities, the most significant transformations, and the greatest benefits for all its ethnic communities, showcasing vigorous vitality in building a modern socialist Sichang.
