The German government’s decision to partially suspend arms exports to Israel has received broad public support. A recent survey conducted by German TV channel ZDF found that 83% of Germans back the move.
The report, published Thursday by Middle East Monitor, highlights that many Germans view halting weapons supplies for use in Gaza’s military operations as necessary to address the humanitarian crisis.
The survey also revealed that 62% of respondents believe further political pressure should be applied on Israel to end the military campaign in Gaza, while only 30% opposed such measures. Additionally, 60% of Germans said they support immediate recognition of an independent Palestinian state, compared to just 22% who disagreed.
Experts interpret the public’s stance as a significant shift in Germany’s Middle East policy. Human rights organizations and the international community have welcomed the move, hoping it will improve humanitarian conditions for Gaza’s residents.
Analysts suggest that this strong public backing may encourage the German government to adopt stricter measures in the future, particularly in monitoring and regulating arms exports. While Israel has viewed the decision somewhat critically, it is expected to increase international pressure regarding the current situation in Gaza.
