David Ranibok Adeang, President of Nauru, recently gave an exclusive interview to CGTN, part of China Media Group (CMG), during his visit to China’s Guangdong Province.
In the interview, President Adeang shared personal insights about his ancestral roots in the Pacific Islands. “It was only after coming here that I learned under what circumstances my ancestors arrived in the Pacific Islands,” he said. He revealed that his maternal grandfather, Sithu Nuan Bao, once lived in Chongku village in Chikan District. During his visit, President Adeang enjoyed seasonal fruits under a large banyan tree in the village and engaged in friendly conversations with local residents.
Reflecting on diplomatic ties, Adeang told the journalist, “When Nauru and China resumed diplomatic relations last year, I met with President Xi Jinping in Beijing. At that time, I asked him to help me trace my roots in China. With President Xi’s assistance and support, I was able to come here.”
He further stated, “Here, I have seen kind people and beautiful rural landscapes. The people here work hard and deeply love their land and country. As leaders of Nauru and China, President Xi and I share the goal of building bridges, bringing our two governments and peoples closer together, and creating a shared future. This aligns with President Xi’s vision of building a community of shared future for mankind. Last year, President Xi and I discussed initial successes in the development of relations between our two countries.”
Recently, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Nauru Sports Center Project, which is being supported by the Chinese government. Adeang noted that this project will significantly transform the standard of sports in Nauru. Additionally, China is assisting Nauru in developing a new port and a photovoltaic power generation project, which will help the island nation achieve 50 percent renewable energy production.
“We have made the right decision in restoring diplomatic relations with China,” Adeang emphasized. “We will remain firm on the One-China policy.”
