The government of Venezuela has introduced special measures to address the impact of an intense heatwave and an ongoing energy shortage. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced that a one-week holiday for public sector employees has been declared to help manage the situation.
According to an AFP report, the country has long been grappling with electricity shortages. The current heatwave has further strained the power system, as rising temperatures have significantly increased electricity consumption.
Under the government’s decision, educational institutions will remain closed from Monday to Friday during the Holy Week period. In addition, various government offices will operate on a limited basis to help reduce electricity usage.
Delcy Rodríguez said that 45 consecutive days of extreme heat have placed additional pressure on the power system, making energy conservation an urgent priority.
However, essential services, including hospitals, will continue to operate. Analysts suggest that while such measures may provide temporary relief, long-term reforms in the energy sector are necessary to address the underlying challenges.
