Former US President Donald Trump said the US and Iran will hold ‘direct talks’ on a possible nuclear deal next Saturday. On the other hand, Iran’s foreign minister also confirmed the talks, although he said they would be ‘indirect’ talks, but at the same time described them as ‘an opportunity and a test’.
Trump said there would be large-scale talks. He warned that if there is no deal, it would be a ‘very bad day for Iran.’ Last month, the US president raised the possibility of military action against Iran after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly rejected the offer of direct talks.
Trump announced the talks after meeting with Israel’s Netanyahu at the White House. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said, “We have a very big meeting with Iran on Saturday and we are talking directly with them…and there is probably going to be a deal, that would be great.”
He added, “If the talks don’t work out, it would be terrible for Iran.” The president did not provide further details about the talks. Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote on Twitter, “This is both an opportunity and a test. The ball is in America’s court now.”
