The United Nations has warned that Lebanon’s security situation remains unstable despite the implementation of a ceasefire, saying civilians continue to face serious risks as violence has not fully stopped.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the continuing attacks and clashes have led to a rising number of civilian casualties across the country. Since early March, more than 2,700 people have reportedly been killed amid the ongoing violence.
Analysts view Wednesday’s Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs as a troubling new escalation. It was the first reported attack on the area since the ceasefire came into effect. Various sources said at least 13 people were killed in the strike.
OCHA stated that the violence has forced many residents to flee their homes in search of safer shelter, while healthcare services and emergency relief operations are also being severely disrupted.
Regional security analysts warn that if the situation in Lebanon is not brought under control quickly, it could contribute to broader instability across the Middle East.
