A United Nations peacekeeper has been killed in an attack on a UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) facility in southern Lebanon, sparking renewed international concern over the safety of peacekeeping operations.
According to UNIFIL, the incident occurred when a peacekeeping position in the Adshit al-Qusayr area of Marjayoun district came under shelling, as reported by Lebanon’s state news agency. Indonesian troops stationed at the base were among those affected.
Local television reports indicate that additional casualties are feared, with several injured personnel rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. However, no official figures have yet been released.
In a separate incident in the same region, at least five people were killed and two others injured in an airstrike on the town of Shaqra. These successive attacks have further worsened the already fragile security situation in southern Lebanon.
Observers note that attacks on United Nations facilities raise serious concerns about compliance with international law and the safety of peacekeeping missions. Such developments are also likely to intensify regional tensions amid an already volatile situation.
