The United Nations has expressed shock and condemnation over the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza City. UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, conveyed condolences to the Al Jazeera family and condemned the incident in the strongest terms. The UN’s mission in Palestine also issued a statement denouncing the attack.
In his statement, Dujarric said, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the Al Jazeera family. We are looking into what happened in Gaza. We have always taken a clear stance in condemning the killing of journalists. Whether in Gaza or elsewhere, it is essential to ensure that media professionals can work freely—without harassment, intimidation, or fear of being targeted.”
He further stressed that journalists must be granted unrestricted access to all areas of Gaza and be allowed to report on the situation without interference.
Meanwhile, the UN mission in Palestine accused Israel of deliberately killing Al Jazeera journalists Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammad Kureikeh by bombing a tent in Gaza City.
The mission noted that Al-Sharif and Kureikeh were among the last remaining journalists in Gaza, who had worked with dedication to expose and document Israel’s acts of genocide and starvation policies.
