Trump Unlikely to Use Force to Seize Greenland, Says Lord Mandelson

Former British ambassador to the United States Lord Mandelson has said that President Donald Trump is unlikely to pursue the risky path of using military force to seize Greenland. While Trump is known for his blunt and forceful political rhetoric, Mandelson believes he remains grounded in reality and is not prone to reckless decision-making.

In an interview with the BBC, Mandelson remarked that Trump is “not a fool” and that his advisers would clearly warn him that any attempt to take Greenland by force could pose a serious threat to U.S. national interests. Despite the island’s strategic importance, such a move would ultimately expose Washington to grave dangers, he argued.

According to Mandelson, although Trump often speaks with striking clarity and toughness, he tends to weigh real-world consequences when it comes to policy decisions. A military venture aimed at Greenland, he said, would undermine America’s international standing and could trigger a deep crisis in relations with key allies.

The debate over Greenland’s future and governance has gained renewed momentum during Trump’s second term. Last Saturday, the president claimed that the United States needs to bring Greenland under its control to counter the growing influence of Russia and China. However, both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea, stating unequivocally that the territory is not for sale.

Denmark has also issued a sharp warning, saying that any military attempt to seize Greenland could spark a severe crisis within NATO, potentially even calling the alliance’s future into question. As a result, while Trump’s remarks have fueled intense international debate, diplomatic analysts believe the likelihood of the United States resorting to force remains slim.
