South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has called on US President Donald Trump to help restore stability on the Korean Peninsula and improve relations with North Korea, amid ongoing regional tensions.
The appeal was made during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, according to the South Korean presidential office. During the meeting, Trump reportedly asked about the overall situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Seoul said President Lee urged Trump to take a leading role in pursuing a peaceful resolution to the North Korean issue, drawing parallels with recent diplomatic efforts aimed at easing conflicts in the Middle East. In response, the US president expressed willingness to engage with the matter.
The discussion comes at a time when Washington and Tehran are reportedly moving toward a memorandum of understanding, prompting speculation that progress in the Middle East could pave the way for renewed US focus on North Korea.
Following recent Iran-related announcements, Trump also shared a photograph on social media from his 2018 Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, further fueling speculation about renewed diplomatic outreach.
The current South Korean administration has maintained a policy favoring dialogue and engagement with North Korea. However, Pyongyang has so far not responded positively to Seoul’s peace initiatives.
