During his two-day visit to China, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of strengthening technological innovation and industrial cooperation. While in Beijing, he test-drove the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class equipped with advanced driving systems, praising the close collaboration between German manufacturers and Chinese technology firms.
In a press statement, Mercedes-Benz announced that the company has established a comprehensive cooperation network across China’s entire industrial chain. It noted that the company’s Chinese research and development teams are playing an increasingly important role within its global innovation network.
Corporate visits and the expansion of practical cooperation were key components of Merz’s itinerary on February 25 and 26. On Thursday afternoon, he arrived in Hangzhou, in east China’s Zhejiang Province, where he expressed admiration after viewing a demonstration of humanoid robots produced by Unitree Robotics.
Wang Xingxing, founder and CEO of Unitree, said that Merz’s visit reflects Germany’s strong interest in China’s technological innovation. Highlighting the potential of the German market, he expressed hope for deeper cooperation in the field of robotics.
In Hangzhou, the Chancellor also reviewed progress at the Siemens high-voltage circuit breaker plant, a facility backed by German investment.
Executives from nearly 30 leading German companies in sectors including automobiles, chemicals, biopharmaceuticals, and machinery accompanied Merz on the trip. More than ten commercial agreements were signed during the visit.
At the conclusion of his tour, Merz stated that Germany and China already enjoy strong cooperation and that both countries must work together to address a range of global challenges.
