Passenger Traffic in China Rises by Nearly 20 Percent During New Year Holidays

China’s Ministry of Transport announced on January 4 that during the New Year holiday period—from January 1 to January 3—the total volume of inter-regional passenger travel across the country reached 595 million trips. This represents an average of 198 million trips per day, marking a 19.62 percent increase compared with the same period in 2025.

Road travel accounted for the largest share, with 539 million passenger trips, averaging 180 million per day, up 15.7 percent year-on-year.

Railway passenger traffic reached 48 million trips, with a daily average of 16 million, reflecting a sharp 52.66 percent increase compared with the daily average during the same period last year.

Passenger travel via waterways totaled 2.248 million trips, with a daily average of 749,300, representing a 32.9 percent increase year-on-year.

Meanwhile, civil aviation recorded 5.876 million passenger trips, averaging 1.9587 million per day, up 10.4 percent compared with the daily average for the same period in 2025.

The data highlight a strong rebound in nationwide mobility during the New Year holiday, underscoring the continued recovery and vitality of China’s transportation sector.
