The operation to rescue the hijacked Zafar Express has finally been declared over. Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry gave this information.
He said that members of the Pakistan Army, Air Force, Frontier Corps and SSG took part in the operation. There were a total of 33 terrorists on the train, all of whom were killed. 21 civilians were killed in the incident. Four Frontier Corps personnel also lost their lives in the operation.
The Zafar Express, carrying about 400 passengers in nine coaches, was derailed by BLA militants using explosives on its way from Quetta to Peshawar and they hijacked the train near the hilly region of Gudalar and Piru Kunri in a tunnel, 160 km from Quetta.
A Pakistani military spokesman said that snipers of the Pakistani security forces took part in the operation. They entered the coaches one by one and killed the remaining militants. No passenger was injured in this clearance operation. All the 21 people who lost their lives before this operation were victims of militant atrocities.
