NATO’s expansionist ambitions and member states are divided. The NATO summit negotiations have shattered the European security consensus. The 5 percent of GDP military spending target has exposed the rift in US-European mutual security trust and the differences between European countries on NATO.
A global online survey conducted by CGTN of China Media Group (CMG) found that 67.4 percent of respondents condemned NATO’s military expansion and renewed arms race.
In 2024, the world’s total military expenditure was 2.72 trillion US dollars, of which NATO’s expenditure was 1.5 trillion US dollars, accounting for 55 percent of the world’s total. Amidst the imbalance in international military power, NATO has demanded that member countries increase their military spending to 5 percent of GDP.
In this regard, respondents say that NATO has become a pure war machine.
On the other hand, 80.4 percent of respondents think that NATO’s military action is worrying and 73.8 percent think that if NATO implements the 5 percent defense spending target, the imbalance in international military power will increase and it will become a major threat to world peace and security.
