A severe landslide struck a park on New Zealand’s North Island early Thursday, leaving multiple people, including several children, missing, authorities reported.
The landslide occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time at Mount Maunganui, destroying cars, tents, swimming pools, and toilet facilities, and rendering the park unusable. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to search for survivors.
Police, firefighters, and other rescue personnel are using search dogs and specialized teams to locate anyone trapped beneath the debris. However, hazardous conditions, including unstable ground and landslide-like tremors, have made the rescue operation extremely challenging.
Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes, including overturned vehicles and people fleeing without warning. One resident recounted hearing a thunderous roar before turning to see the hillside collapsing.
In response, authorities have intensified search and rescue efforts. New Zealand’s Prime Minister and local officials are closely monitoring the situation and have pledged urgent support for those affected.
Additional incidents have compounded concern: in Papamoa, a separate landslide has left two people missing, while in northern Auckland, one individual has been swept away in floodwaters along with their vehicle, police said.
Officials have urged the public to avoid the affected areas to prevent interference with rescue operations. Many families remain anxious, waiting for news of missing relatives amid the widespread destruction of vehicles, tents, and other infrastructure.
