Chinese President Xi Jinping has underscored the importance of self-reliance in science and technology in a recent reply letter addressed to faculty members and students of four leading universities: Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University, and Beijing Jiaotong University.
Xi, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, expressed high expectations for the future development of these institutions.
In his letter, Xi noted that the four universities share a common heritage and are jointly celebrating their 130th anniversary this year. He extended his congratulations to all faculty members, staff, students, and alumni.
He emphasized the need to uphold the guiding principles of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era. Xi called on the institutions to carry forward their motto of “seeking truth from facts and engaging in practical work,” while preserving and promoting the spirit of westward relocation.
Highlighting national priorities, Xi urged the universities to focus on the country’s major strategic needs, strengthen independent innovation in science and technology, and enhance the cultivation of high-level talent. He also stressed the importance of achieving deeper integration among industry, education, and research, aiming for more groundbreaking accomplishments.
Xi further noted that these efforts would contribute to building China into a strong nation in education, science and technology, and human resources.
