Iran Says US Strike Damaged Desalination Plant, Leaving 20 Villages Without Drinking Water

Iran has claimed that a US military airstrike destroyed the main pumps of a key desalination water treatment plant in Boonji village of Jask County, Hormozgan Province, southern Iran, cutting off drinking water supplies to around 20 villages with a combined population of nearly 10,000 people.

Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim News reported the development on Saturday (July 18).

According to the report, the strike destroyed the plant’s main pumping station responsible for drawing seawater, along with a major electricity transformer. The damage reportedly forced the entire facility to stop operations, disrupting the supply of clean water to nearby villages.

Abdulhamid Hamzehpour, Chief Executive Officer of the Hormozgan Water and Wastewater Company, strongly condemned the reported attack, describing it as part of a “continuation of crimes” and a “terrorist attack.”

He said the facility had served as the primary source of safe drinking water for thousands of people living in coastal areas.

Hamzehpour added that the destruction of the infrastructure has left residents in remote areas facing severe water shortages. Authorities have launched emergency measures to provide alternative sources of drinking water and address the crisis.

The United States has not yet issued any official comment or response regarding the incident. Therefore, the claim of the attack could not be independently verified.
