China to Accelerate Establishment of the World AI Cooperation Organization

China will accelerate efforts to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) together with its founding member states following the signing of the organization’s founding agreement by representatives of 29 countries in Shanghai on Thursday (July 17).

The announcement was made by Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a regular press briefing in Beijing on Friday.

Lin said the establishment of WAICO marks another important step toward building a global community with a shared future for mankind and advancing the Global Governance Initiative.

He added that, working alongside all participating countries and guided by the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, China will uphold the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, while maintaining a people-centered approach.

According to Lin, China and the founding members will strengthen coordination on AI development strategies, governance rules, and technical standards, promote international cooperation and global governance in the field of artificial intelligence, and support the safe, secure, equitable, and orderly development of AI for the benefit of all.
