Iran is reportedly planning to impose transit fees on international vessels passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. According to state media, a draft law to this effect is currently under preparation and is expected to be finalized soon.
Citing reports from Fars News and Tasnim News Agency, officials indicated that the legislative process is already underway in the Iranian parliament. The proposed measure aims to introduce charges on ships, including oil tankers, using the key maritime route.
The chairman of the parliament’s Civil Affairs Committee stated that Iran plays an active role in ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz, making it reasonable to collect fees from vessels benefiting from this protection. He added that similar toll systems exist in other global trade corridors, and applying such a policy in Hormuz would not be unusual.
Analysts view the move as part of Iran’s broader strategic positioning, particularly amid ongoing regional tensions. Tehran has previously outlined a set of conditions linked to the current situation, with recognition of its authority over the strait emerging as a significant point.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for global trade and energy supply. Any move to impose tolls on shipping through the passage is likely to spark renewed international debate and concern.
