Internet Services Suspended for Five Days in Manipur’s Ukhrul District Amid Fresh Violence

Authorities in India’s Manipur state have suspended internet and data services for five days in Ukhrul district following renewed violence between local communities. The suspension, effective from 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, covers mobile data, broadband, VPN and VSAT services.

The decision comes after unrest broke out on Sunday in the Litan Bazaar area of Ukhrul district. Officials said the measure was taken to prevent the spread of inflammatory images, posts and videos on social media that could worsen the law-and-order situation.

According to police, clashes erupted between members of the Naga and Kuki communities on Sunday night. The violence led to arson attacks on several homes and private vehicles, escalating tensions further after a member of the Tangkhul Naga community was seriously injured. Police have held several Kuki individuals responsible for triggering the incident, sparking retaliatory attacks from both sides.

Authorities reported that more than 20 private houses and government quarters were set on fire, forcing hundreds of villagers to flee to safer areas on Monday.

To bring the situation under control, the district magistrate imposed an indefinite curfew overnight. Additional personnel from state police and central security forces have been deployed, and restrictions have been placed on carrying licensed firearms. Despite these measures, officials say the situation remains tense.
