Regional Director of the UN Development Coordination Office (UN DCO) Mr. David McLachlan-Karr and the Regional Director of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) Mr. Vincent Oduour Omuga called on the Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md. Jashim Uddin at his office today.
Foreign Secretary appreciated the United Nations’ consistent support towards the development journey of Bangladesh and apprised them about reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government with an appeal to the UN system to extend necessary support to the government. The Foreign Secretary also appreciated the recent allocation from the UN Central Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) to Bangladesh for addressing the emergency needs resulted from the recent flood in the Eastern region of the country.
Foreign Secretary highlighted the challenges Bangladesh is enduring due to prolonged hosting of the Rohingya people and emphasized the need to mobilize international support to find a durable and early solution of the Rohingya crisis by way of their dignified and sustainable return to their homeland.
The two Regional Directors conveyed UN’s strong support to the Government’s priorities and assured to leverage regional and global assets to help Bangladesh fulfilling those priorities. They also expressed their willingness to readjust the Cooperation Framework to better accommodate the priorities of the Government. The visiting Regional Directors apprised the Foreign Secretary of their intention to ensure better coordination between development and humanitarian activities, being carried out in Bangladesh by different partners.
