Five Killed as Structure Collapses in Delhi’s Humayun’s Tomb Complex

Delhi, August 15 :At least five visitors lost their lives in a tragic accident at the UNESCO-listed Humayun’s Tomb complex in the Indian capital, Delhi. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when an old structure within the historic site suddenly collapsed in the Nizamuddin area.

According to local media, the collapse happened around 4:30 p.m. when a section adjacent to the dome gave way, trapping an estimated 15 to 20 people inside. Police confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been recovered, while several others are feared to be buried under the debris. Officials said the death toll could rise as the site was crowded with tourists due to the holiday. At least five fire service units were deployed to carry out rescue operations.

Humayun, the second emperor of the Mughal Empire, ascended the throne in 1530 after the death of his father, Babur. Defeated by Sher Shah Suri, he spent years in exile before regaining his empire. Following his death in 1556, his first wife, Bega Begum, commissioned the construction of his tomb in 1565.

Regarded as India’s first garden tomb, the monument is considered a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. The site also serves as the final resting place of more than 150 members of the Mughal dynasty, earning it the title of the “Necropolis of the Mughal Dynasty.” Due to its historical and architectural significance, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
