Fire at drug treatment center in Mexico kills 12

A fire has killed 12 people and injured at least three others in a drug treatment center in the violence-plagued Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The fire broke out in the city of San Jose Iturbe early Sunday, CNN reported. The municipal government said it had launched an investigation into the cause of the deadly blaze.

Mexican drug cartels have previously attacked suspects from rival gangs who have taken refuge in rehabilitation centers. In April, gunmen opened fire on a drug treatment center in the violence-plagued state of Sinaloa, killing at least nine people.

In 2020, gunmen shot and killed 27 people at another rehabilitation center in the city of Irapuato, Guanajuato. In 2010, a 19-person attack on a rehabilitation center in Chihuahua, northern Mexico, killed more than a dozen other attacks.

According to government statistics, nearly 480,000 people have been killed in criminal violence in Mexico since 2006 and nearly 120,000 people have gone missing.
