Following the announcement by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, the Department of Environment today conducted a nationwide crackdown on factories producing banned polythene shopping bags. During an enforcement raid in Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar area, utility connections, including gas, electricity, and water, were disconnected at one factory.
Thirteen mobile courts operated nationwide, targeting illegal storage and marketing of banned polythene. A total of BDT 180,500 in fines was imposed on 26 businesses. Additionally, 746 kg of polythene and one truck were seized.
On the other hand, a meeting with environmental organizations at the Bangladesh Secretariat, the Environment Advisor announced that actions would also be taken soon against illegal battery-breaking and lead-smelting factories. She emphasized that the government is taking progressive steps to curb all forms of pollution to protect nature.
