On the evening of August 13 (local time), the United Nations hosted a special session of the “Echoes of Peace” cultural exchange, jointly organized by China Media Group (CMG) and China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, at the UN Headquarters in New York. Shen Haixiong, Vice Minister of China’s Publicity Department and Director-General of CMG, delivered a video message at the event. Speeches were also made by China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Fu Cong, UN Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming, and Jeff Green, Chairman of the US-China Aviation Heritage Foundation. The event was attended by over 100 guests, including ambassadors from more than 30 countries, representatives of UN agencies, and veterans and successors of the “Flying Tigers” team. This marked the global launch of CMG’s “Echoes of Peace” cultural exchange series.
Fu Cong stated that 80 years ago, the Chinese people, together with anti-fascist allies including the Soviet Union, the United States, and peoples from countries around the world, achieved the great victory in the World Anti-Fascist War. During the 14-year-long bloody struggle, the Chinese people made countless sacrifices, defeating Japanese imperialism at the cost of 35 million lives, playing a decisive role in the victory of the global anti-fascist war. Peace-loving and just nations and peoples around the world provided invaluable support to China’s war effort, creating a glorious shared history. Today, we gather to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of World War II, recalling the core purpose of the United Nations’ founding and learning from history to move forward toward the future.
Shen Haixiong highlighted that the event showcased Chinese films and TV programs such as Long Sky Flying Tigers and The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru, allowing audiences to understand the value of peace and cultivate a sense of responsibility for its preservation. CMG seeks to strengthen collaboration with international partners and promote China’s voice in support of justice and prosperity, enabling collective efforts to address challenges and achieve development through cooperation.
Melissa Fleming noted that over the past 80 years, the UN, as the most universal and authoritative intergovernmental organization, has upheld the principles of the UN Charter by preventing armed conflict, resolving regional crises, and maintaining international peace and security. She highly praised China’s role as a responsible major power in promoting multilateralism, global cooperation, and development, and called on the international community to increase humanitarian assistance in addressing global challenges such as climate change and food security, ensuring the principles of the UN Charter are preserved for a brighter future for coming generations.
It is reported that special sessions of the “Echoes of Peace” cultural exchange will also be held in Russia, Kenya, the United States, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
