London – Hungarian-British author David Szalai has won the 2025 Booker Prize for his novel Flash. The announcement was made on Monday, November 10, in London. Szalai, 51, was awarded the prestigious literary prize for his sixth novel, which explores the persecution and displacement of a Hungarian immigrant, earning widespread acclaim from both readers and critics.
For the Booker Prize, Szalai competed against notable authors including Indian novelist Kiran Desai and British writer Andrew Miller, among five others. Judges included Irish writer Roddy Doyle and actress Sarah Jessica Parker. Doyle described Flash as “strangely alive and dark, yet deeply enjoyable to read.”
Born in Montreal to a Hungarian father and Canadian mother, Szalai grew up in London and studied at Oxford University.
